Word Bird Wednesday: Pelican

I really look forward to Wednesday because of Springman's Word Bird Wednesday over at The Pine River Review!  It's a great way to see and share bird photos from all over the world- and the pictures are fabulous!  Come and join in the fun- I assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Yesterday, I saw 23+ Vultures at the ponds--Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures.  It was quite interesting- all those vultures in one place.  Every time we approached, they would fly off and that whomp, whomp, whomp of their wings was almost eerie sounding.  They rarely all gathered together, although, at one point, 19 of them were in the same area.  And, in the midst of them all, a Pelican kept going from group to group.  I think it is an American White Pelican- I am basing this on an internet search (and by internet search I mean I googled pelicans).  You can see the vultures on Monday's post.

AND NOW FOR THE EDITI got the darn bird wrongAGAIN.  Thank you Dixxe and Blobby for helping out and identifying the pelican as a BROWN!  I will get these creatures right.  One day.  I'm sure.  I hope.  Maybe.  LOL

Great photos of the pelican. It is certainly different from the pelicans we have out here in Australia.

Nice shots of a pelican! When googling pelican you probably ran across the youtube video showing a white pelican walk over to a pigeon, grabbing it and swallowing it whole. That changed my whole view of pelicans!

You've got Pelican in flight shots! These look so great enlarged and the detail is exquisite(I've got my laptop hooked up into the 42" flatscreen). What a fun day you had with the camera. Pelicans and Buzzards? It might be awhile before we ever see this again!

I have no idea why he was following the vultures around--is that uncommon? He moved from group to group. I totally forgot about hooking the computer to the big tv...now, where's that darn cable...LOL

How cool! Love the flight shots of the pelican...it looks more like a brown to me, but I live inland so I never see either around here. I recall the first white I saw was in the middle of Montana and that surprised the heck outta me!!

It had to be you...
Just went back through your archives, and yes, it was you took that iconic picture of the white egret with the wings at half beat, over the water. That picture is stuck in my mind's eye.

Beautiful photos!!

The species is a brown pelican, the American white pelican is entirely white apart from black primaries and secondaries in the wing. In fact, I just blogged my first sighting of one a few days ago if you care to compare:

I look forward to looking through the rest of your posts
